About Us

Our Past

Founded in 1985 under the name Johnston, Ross & Co., the original partners Geoffrey Johnston and Calvin Ross shared a strong understanding, with similar qualities, practices, directions, and goals.

Johnston, Ross & Co. was built on a foundation of high standards, adaptability, and professionalism. In 1993, with the addition of Roger Cheng, the company continued its growth and commitment to excellence, all while maintaining a focus on delivering outstanding service.

As one of the original founders of the firm, Geoffrey brings over 50 years of experience appraising all property types for a variety of purposes.

He has mentored articling students and junior appraisers, served as a lecturer at the Richmond School Board, and worked with local real estate firms through an agent development program. He was also previously retained by the board of Metro Vancouver (formerly GVRD) to review the appraisals commissioned for the Broadway corridor and provide advisory services.

Trusted by municipalities and councils throughout Metro Vancouver, Geoffrey is a true leader and advocate for the future of the industry.

His litigation experience includes appearances as an expert witness in Provincial, Supreme, and Federal Courts, the Assessment Appeal Board, as well as the Expropriation Compensation Board.

Outside the appraisal industry, Geoffrey serves as a director for several charitable organizations focused on children.

Dean has been a member of the Appraisal Institute of Canada since 1989, the same year he joined Johnston, Ross & Cheng Ltd., where he became a partner in 2017.

He was awarded the senior designation Accredited Appraiser Canadian Institute (AACI) in 2006 and, with it, use of the Professional Appraiser (P.App.) certification. Prior to that, he earned the Canadian Residential Appraiser (CRA) designation in 1999.

Dean has extensive experience appraising residential, agricultural, commercial, industrial, and multi‑family properties for purposes such as mortgage financing, tax assessment appeals, rent renewals, and feasibility studies. However, his primary focus is litigation support in family and civil law matters, and he has frequently appeared as an expert witness before the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

Dean has successfully completed the AIC Co‑signing course and currently co‑signs the work of two Candidate Members. He also supervises junior appraisers and has occasionally lectured on real estate appraisals for various organizations.

Dean lives in Ladner with his wife, Dena, and their two daughters. In his free time, he enjoys swimming, cycling, and running.
